Information Definitions of Terms

Accessibility
A measure of how accessible a website is to users with particular needs, for example those with visual or hearing impairments.


Affiliate Scheme
A method of promoting an online business in which an affiliate is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber, customer, and/or sale received via the affiliate's site.


Browser
Software program that enables you to view documents on the internet, eg Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera. The software 'translates' the code into the display you see.


CSS
Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is typically used to provide a single "library" of styles that can be applied universally throughout a whole website. It is also a vital tool in creating web page layouts, as layout can be achieved without compromising content structure or meaning, and the content can also be re-ordered in the page, serving up information in order of importance to the Search Engines.


CMS
Content Management System. Allows clients to access and control the content of their website


Cookie
A message from a web server, sent to and stored by your browser on your computer. Cookies are mainly used to provide customised Web pages according to a profile of your interests.


Dynamic Packaging
Method of integrating any number of seperate feeds into one website to enable consumers to build their own package of flights, accommodation, care hire etc instead of purchasing a pre-defined package.


E-commerce
Buying and selling of products or services via electronic media, typically the internet


E-marketing
Marketing of products or services via electronic media, typically email or the internet.


FTP
File Transfer Protocol. Method of file transfer commonly used to transfer data onto a web server for viewing on the internet.


Microsite
An individual web page or a number of pages making up a small site, which serves as a supplement to a primary website, often used as a platform to market one distinct area of a business.


Organic Ranking
Ranking achieved in a search engine by process of search engine optimisation only (ie not paid for results)


PPC
Pay per Click. Refers to Search Engine advertising such as Google Adwords, where paid-for links are displayed above other 'organic' rankings.


SEO
Search Engine Optimisation. The process of improving the volume of traffic directed to a website by search engines; principally by targeting key words or terms which the target audience may use to search.


URL
Uniform Resource Locator. The name for the address at which a webpage can be located.


Usability
A measure of how 'easy' and intuitive a website is to use: relates to layout and labelling of content, navigation and user journey.


White Labelling
Creating a product or service with no brand on which can be sold to a third party to be used with their brand
